Red And The Sheep: No More Running

by Jon Katz

Up until last week, Red ran a bit when we were out with the sheep. A few days ago, he kept dropping to the ground after running a few feet. We’re going to see. Dr. Fariello tomorrow and Red will get some acupuncture and a check-up. I think I’ll recommend that we stop running him at all.

I can’t tell if it’s his heart or his spine.

Dr. Fariello and I both thought it would be healthy for him to get some exercise, but it’s time to stop. He seems comfortable when he’s not running, I know he has sight problems but he knew where to look today when the sheep were out in the back pasture.

He loves to sit on a hill and watch over his flock. I’m still finding my way through this, and it is very difficult for me to accept so many limits on this proud and wonderful working dog.

I think his running is over, and I’ll talk it over with the vet tomorrow after she checks his heart and gets a look at him.
