Video: Asher’s Poignant Painting: “Call My Friends…”

by Jon Katz

This painting, titled “Call My Friends,”  is almost finished, I am offering it for sale for $30. If you are interested, please e-mail me: [email protected], first come, first serve.

Good news and poignant news. We visited the Bishop Maginn High School today, carrying art supplies,  some cash payments for paintings, and sneakers for the twins from Pakistan Issachar and Asher.

Red was a hit, as always, surrounded by adoring women with treats. He was happy.

The good news is that we have saved these two from having to leave the high school (thanks Kathleen, and others), we raised enough tuition money to keep them safe for the remainder of their high school time. Thank you.

The poignant news is the pain and trauma that these two quite remarkable young men have had to live with, and live with still, although their outward demeanor is almost always cheerful and bright. Asher says his art helps him heal.

Asher was too shy to ask me to sell this painting, he asked Blue to do it, and I went over to him and talked about in this candid and touching video. I can’t discuss what he and his brother have been through, other than to say it has been wrenching and painful.

I brought both of them new sneakers today, Issachar’s was blue, Asher’s was red. Asher said he was terrified at first, because he knew he didn’t have the money to pay for it. I told him it was free, and he was stunned, unable to speak for a few minutes. I saw his eyes tear.

These two children are great, their love for their month is powerful and moving. I will keep watch over them, and help them in practical ways when I can. Ishar’s ode to friendship is on sale for $30. If you want to buy it, please e-mail me at [email protected]. (Please don’t send money to Paypal or anywhere else without a confirmation e-mail from me, thanks, its first come first serve.)

And thanks. Both boys will be coming to the high school regularly to visit Sue Silverstein’s class and do some painting and other creative work. I’ll be coming to the school every Wednesday.

Please check out our new Bishop Maginn Laptop Project, we are seeking to buy 26 laptops for Issachar and Asher and the students to use at school. Yes, I have researched asking computer companies for free computers, no, it won’t work for this school and they don’t care. Thanks for caring.
