For The Love Of Our Grass

by Jon Katz

Phase Two of our Pasture Restoration Project was completed yesterday. When Doug Jesseman looked at the weather forecast,  he called up and said it would be a good day to come and spread the three tons of fertilizer he thought we needed for our three small pastures, along with the six tons of lime he spread the day before.

Rain sinks the lime and manure into the ground, neither is dangerous to animals, but it isn’t comfortable for them to eat. After any kind of rain it’s perfectly safe. We  had a lot of rain last night and this morning.

From now on, Doug will come every year with a mix of lime and manure, this will bring up some fresh green grass in 5 to 10 days. The animals had worn down our pastures, they were almost shot.

The lime cost $300, the manure cost $450, but we will restore our pastures, essential to the healthy life of our farm and our animals. My  budget doesn’t need a $1,000 restoration project, but we love our farm and are stewards of this land. It will be exciting to see this grass come up.

There are at least two things I really want to take care of here one is my car, the other is the farm. If you love the farm, it will love you back. If you don’t, it will eat you alive, limb by limb.
