From Blue, A Departure: “Sleep Peacefully, Darkness”

by Jon Katz

Today, a departure from Blue, the gifted artist refugee student at Bishop Maginn High School In Albany. Blue says she has dark moods, especially at night.

She wrote this on the back of the watercolor, which she calls “Sleep Peacefully.”

“One said when you wake up, the world will be vanish, and gone forever.” She said she does not feel that dark in the day time, at night, she spends a lot of time awake and looking at the stars.

This water-color is for sale for $25 plus $10 to go to the School Supplies Fund for Bishop Maginn. Shipping is $6.

(Good news, there is only one laptop left on the Bishop Maginn High School Wish List, and six microscopes. This will take us more than halfway to the goal of 26 laptops and 20 microscopes. Thanks, you can also buy a $10 or $25 gift card. Believe me, it feels good. And it does good.)

I think it is one of her most honest and original works, and I think this creativity helps her sleep and through some of the dark dreamsĀ  that are familiar to many refugee children.

If you want to purchase it, please e-mail me, [email protected]. I’ll provide payment and other details.

I brought five paintings home with me last Wednesday, all are sold, this is the next to theĀ  last one. “Sunshine,” the one below will be put up for sale next. It is quite different and reflects a different side of Blue. Like all good artists, she has many sides.

First come, first serve, [email protected]. $41 altogether.

Below, “Sunshine” I’ll put it up for sale later today or tomorrow. It is also $25 plus $10 for school supplies, $6 for shipping.

There is an inscription, it begins: “See all the beautiful stars up, looking down upon us and guiding us..”

So interesting to see these two sides of Blue, if anyone wants both, I’ll offer the two of them together for $50 no shipping charge or school supplies surcharge, [email protected]. Blue has agreed to donate a portion of her proceeds for school supplies, so many children there don’t have any. [email protected], first come, first serve.
