Pancakes And Community At Jean’s Place

by Jon Katz

It’s curious how comfortable Maria and I feel at Jean’s Place in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. We go every Saturday morning, sometimes Sunday morning, for oat bran pancakes (short stack) and we share a couple of strips of lean, crisp bacon.

The coffee and tea we drink are usually waiting for us before we sit down, and we seem to have found a favorite table for us, on one end of the counter. We try to go in the late morning, after the breakfast rush and before the lunch rush.

Every time I show up, somebody comes up and thanks me for saying nice things about Jean’s and Robin, they love their restaurant there are and are pleased to see it getting some credit.

Maria is learning how to relax, we stayed in bed until 11 a.m., reading and talking and loving our time together, then we set out for Jean Place. It’s odd how rituals enter one’s life and stick there.

This is unprecedented for her, she usually wakes up with 100 things she needs to do, and does them all. I had a wicked panic attack Saturday morning, so we’re trying to have a gentle day. Jean’s is a great place to start, a movie as good or better to follow that.

We came home to blog, tend the gardens, exercise the dogs, and this afternoon, we’re going to see the new Quentin Tarantino movie, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, which stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

I’m going to review it when I get home.

  1. Have you seen the movie Yesterday?
I highly recommend it. I want friends to see it so we can talk about it, great music and some great lines.
Luckily we went and the theater was empty so I could song along and not bother anyone.
    I enjoy your movie reviews
