Fate And The Gang Of Three

by Jon Katz

The Mansion Gang Of Three, as I call Nancy, Georgianna, and Bert, were huddled under a Mansion eave to stay out of the rain, the Secret Garden was soaked by some severe thunderstorms.

Fate got out of the car and made a beeline for Georgianna, who has the same excitement level as Fate, the two bonded immediately. Georgianna was mad at me because I hadn’t been to the Mansion since yesterday (she said I was gone all weekend). I said this means you want cigarettes.

She laughed and nodded. I told Georgianna last week that I wasn’t telling her not to smoke, but I wasn’t comfortable spending my money on cigarettes, especially when they cost $10 a pack. I said I would bring her a pack once in a while.

She and Fate had a joyous reunion, Fate is really attached to her. I asked the Gang Of Tree if they needed anything. Bert always says no, Georgianna asks for some clothing once in a while (shoes and sandals) and Nancy has never asked for anything.

Today, Nancy shyly said she could use a sweatshirt. Georgianna asked for a pack of cigarettes. Bert said she didn’t need anything. I went over to Carroll’s Trading Post and asked Bev and Kayla if they had a medium-sized sweatshirt, and they had a beautiful pink one.

I went to the Cumberland Farms, got carded and got a pack of cigarettes for Georgianna. I told her I could buy her a pack or two a month, but that was all. I didn’t want to use the Army of Good money for cigarettes, people have greater needs.

Fate and Georgianna did some serious hugging when I got back.  Nancy liked her pink sweatshirt and I got her a  heavy corduroy overshirt to wear when it got cold. Georgianna was grateful for her cigarettes.

Burt and Georgianna said they wanted to come to my weekly meditation class at the Mansion Thursday morning. I said I thought it would benefit them both.

I’m nearing the end of my campaign to make sure everyone at the Mansion who needs clothing help has a sweatshirt, a sweater, a warm shirt and the right shoes for winter. Fifteen so far, eight more to go.

Fate had another very good day at the Mansion.
