It Happened Suddenly

by Jon Katz

I’ve been trying to chronicle the bonding that is occurring between me and our new puppy, Zinnia. It happened rather slowly, and I didn’t see it coming.

She wants to be with me when I’m writing. I didn’t train her to do it, ask her to do it, or even expect her to do it. I did hope she would do it, and perhaps she picked up on that somehow.

She is very much at peace here with me, and I feel like a have something back that is precious to me and that I lost. Bud is a family dog, not a one-person dog and Fate is very much Maria’s dog, they are perfect for one another.

Red was my dog, and I did not expect to have a dog sitting by my side while I write, quiet as can be. And Zinnia is not usually quiet. When he died, it felt as if I had lost an arm or a leg. This feels better.

I’m happy to share this experience with you. Maria says I have a very happy look on my face.

  1. Jon, It’s wonderful when the universe provides us exactly what we need. My heart is happy for you, Zinnia, Maria and Bedlam farm. From what you’ve shared, Zinnia appears to be the sweetest, most perfect dog for you and she couldn’t be more adorable. But, aren’t all puppies.

  2. Dear Jon,

I love hearing about Zinnia finding her way into the routines, spaces, and hearts of her new home. Dogs are such gifts I think. It makes me think with more hope and less tension as I think about losing my aging corgi, Owen, one day. He does not read my mind, but sometimes it feels like it. He is my sweet dog and I imagine losing him will feel like losing a limb – as you describe losing Red. I’m so glad to know I may have the chance to recover some of that missing love, companionship, warmth with another dog – we just have to be found by them perhaps. Thank you, as always, for sharing your special bond with your animals. I love reading the thoughts of someone who also loves animals.

    Warmly,
    Kate
