Training Zinnia, Learning From My Mistakes

by Jon Katz

I don’t post these videos because I am a great trainer. I post them because I am not. Videos help me and others learn from my mistakes. I tend to use too many words and am sometimes not clear about transitions.

The videos have helped me to be more precise and also to be more relaxed and confident.

I am working on using single words – “come,” “sit,” “stay,” and sometimes, “good,” for reinforcement with voice. I am using treats half the time and will soon reduce it further.

We are working on more extended “stays,” and she has gotten the release command “you’re free,” which should be “free.” I am more confident about her, and she is more explicit about me, we are working well together.

I train her in different places, sometimes with other dogs. Fate was hanging around this morning, neither Zinnia nor I paid much attention to her which is good

On the whole, I’m pleased. I’m lengthening the stays, and that will take patience from man and dog. Come along and see.
