Sweet Sally, Update. Dogs Keep Love Alive In Us

by Jon Katz

I was pleased to get this photo from Donna Nicosia this morning, every time I pointed a camera at Sally when I saw her here, she ran into the kitchen and hid. Sally is morphing into a happy, healthy dog.

Her fosterer, Bette Parslow has done something I would not be able to do, begun to flip this frightened and fearful dog into the beginnings of a social animal. Sally sits in Bette’s lap, plays with her dogs, goes on walks, eliminates outside for the first time in her 10-year life.

With her yeast and other infections, she is more comfortable as well as social. Sorry, Bette couldn’t keep her, but she is going to the perfect home.

The community of dog lovers responded quickly and forcefully to her trouble, and she is soon to leave the East Coast for Portland Oregon. It turns out Sally has a good deal of fun in her.

We are a community, after all, and rush to the aid of animals in trouble. Decency and love are their own reward.

Donna Nicosia says she now has enough money to pay for Sally’s medical bills and help her new human get her to Portland on a regular airline seat.

She reminds me once again that dogs are among the most adaptable of creatures. Many people I’ve met believe that their dogs can’t be left alone in a house for a few hours while they work, or be left behind on vacation.

But dogs can be left alone, and enjoy it. They don’t know the difference between an hour and a day, and they don’t care. Like me, they need some time to think.

Bud makes the same point as Sally. Given the right home, dogs can become what we need them to be, and what they need to be. I am reminded to not give up on dogs, they are capable of rebirth and renewal, in the right hands.

I don’t want to emotionalize dog people, but I do think that loving dogs opens up our hearts and keeps love alive within us.

Sally is sweet, and Sally is lucky. Thanks once more to this Army Of Good for their big hearts.
