Poem:” I Disagree With You, But…”

by Jon Katz

Love me, hate me, troll me, like me,

share me, ban me,

cancel me,

but please, please, don’t say

you often disagree with me, but…

you read me anyway.

No one ever taught me the point

of only reading people I agree with,

how could you,

why would you?

Get a refund if that

happens…

Save me from the piety of the left,

and the right,

the hiding places of the mind

and tell me why you

would you agree with me all of the time?

or disagree with me all of the time.

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone

who did that and survived.

My brain is hungry,

and needs food,

something different,

something new,

every day.

I’ve never read anything from anyone

I agreed with all of the time,

or disagreed with,

all of the time.

Everyone in the ballroom

tonight will be my special guest,

How will I treat you when you arrive?

There is nobody in the world

who can’t dance with me

on my silver dance floor,

sparkling with jewels…”
