For the Mansion, Jean’s Special Lunch

by Jon Katz

Every Wednesday, Jean’s Place brings lunch to the Mansion residents. Interesting and delicious food is a huge morale booster in assisted care, not only for the residents but for the staff as well. We make sure to send enough for everybody.

Institutional food is often borning, and with the residents being kept inside without visitors, any change in the routine is welcome.

We’ve done lasagna, sandwiches, mac n’cheese, Jean’s much-loved goulash. I asked if they could come up with something special next Wednesday, and they did, they were ready: Jean’s very famous Chicken Bowl, a mix of mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, chicken, and one or two other ingredients I forget.

The Chicken Bowl is famous in North Hoosick Falls, where Jean’s is located. They are excited about preparing it for the residents, the staff is excited to see it and eat it.

It shakes up the day, breaks the rhythm that can get so stale. I’ll try to get a photo next week.
