Second Cut: Barn Full Of Hay

by Jon Katz

We had a hay scare last week for the first time since I’ve moved up here.  Climate change is upending our lives. Because of the flooding and rain last Spring, the farmers couldn’t get their hay cut, and people looking for their second round of hay are in a panic, looking for suppliers.

After 26 phone calls (last week, I said 35 and once, 36 I had 33 names on my notepad)I found one and a good one – John and Mark from Greenwich Agway. I got 30 bales of the first cut and then ordered 10 bales of the second cut, more nutritious hay good for boosting energy in the cold weather.

It was a mad scramble, but it was successful. I never want to come close to running out of hay when we have animals who depend on it.

I’m ordering next year’s hay right now because climate change isn’t getting any better. Hay shortages and rising hay prices will make it tougher on animals and people who rescue them or just like to live with them.

The second cut cost $9 a bale, almost twice what it cost a couple of years ago.

The hay we have is first-class, thick, most bales that will help our animals thrive. It’s a wonderful feeling to know we have a barn full of hay, and more coming in Spring, weather permitting.

  1. You already said that it took 36 phone calls, and now you’re saying it’s 26. You have far more in common with Trump and his lies than you’re willing to admit.

    1. This is excellent news, Jennifer, I look forward to my Mansion and fame (and bank account..) I’ve actually written 36, 26, and on my note pad, there are 33 numbers I called..) Welcome to the blog, you must be new as well as humorless…

  2. Hey!!! Jennifer. Take a breath. Mistakes happen and that’s what it was. Glad you got your barn full, Jon. I just bought one bale. Not from a farmer from a coop. Paid $13.50 Cdn. Scared for sure. Love your blog. Take care.
