Does Bud Look Like Edward G. Robinson?

by Jon Katz

Maria and I have had a longstanding argument. I love Bud dearly, but I think he looks like Edward G. Robinson, which is not exactly a figure of beauty.

Maria thinks he is quite beautiful, handsome and well proportioned, and full of gravitas. Bud had a rough time for the first two years of his life in Southern Arkansas, but thanks to Carol Johnson and her dedicated rescue group, he was taken from a very creepy human and shipped up to us.

Bud had heartworms, was starved, and dying of exposure. He lived in a pen with no roof his whole life and his pen mates all died. A kind neighbor called the rescue group which bought him for $150.

He racked up $1,000 in vet bills before he was put on a truck and shipped to Brattleboro, Vt. He was thin and his coat was dry and he shook with terror for days. He is the Little King of Bedlam Farm.

He thinks he is Godzilla, and he pushes Fate and Zinnia around constantly. He doesn’t shake with terror any longer, he spends much of his life in Maria’s lap or mine. He loves to be scratched on his forehead.

He is making up for lost time, basking by the woodstove fire when it’s cold, stalking chipmunks, moles, and mice when warm in the fenced-in yard he loves to roam.

Bud loves his treats, especially turkey tendons and cow esophagus. He sleeps on a sea of blankets in his own personal crate in our bedroom. He snores like a drunk.

I guess the bottom line is I think he is wonderfully ugly. I love Boston Terriers and hope always to have one. He and Zinnia are inseparable chums, the Mutt and Jeff of Bedlam Farm.

  1. As my friend once said about my schnauzer with an underbite, “he has a face only a mother could love.” Bud’s beauty clearly comes from within, which is arguably more important than outward beauty, even in canines.

  2. More like Winston Churchill. Except I think that comparison is reserved for English bulldogs. In either case, he needs a cigar to complete his persona. Or is that his dogona? Or something?

  3. I agree, he does look like Edward G.! (But then, many Bostons do…) His face has great character, and from your postings we know he IS quite a character, too! Our first dog when I was a kid was a Boston, Sally, a wonderful pet and vigorous companion to active suburban kids. Wow, did she snore! And when we moved to the country she adapted to that life instantly, running the woods joyfully with our farmer neighbor’s motley pack who, surprisingly, welcomed the little “city” dog. She lived to be quite the old dowager lady. I’ve never been without a dog or two in my life for very long, thanks to that early bond with Sally. So glad Bud landed so well after his horrible start in life!
