Surprise Visit To Our Little Free Library. Community Lives

by Jon Katz

We had a surprise but very welcome visit to our Little Free Library this afternoon. She saw our library had a visitor.

Maria heard a dog barking ( I was at the gym), and she got a photo of the horse-drawn carriage that comes by daily and a young girl getting out to browse our free little library.

The girl took a good while, Maria said, to browse through our books while an older woman, probably her mother, sat in the carriage and waited, and their strong and dutiful horse took a leak.

We don’t know if she found anything – there are many neat books in there – but she is very welcome to stop by any time. Many people pull over to check on the books there, even in heavy snow, but this was a first, a horse and carriage.

We both loved the idea of this new family stopping here; I hope she found something she wanted.

Our little free library has a lot of customers. Community lives.

We welcome our new neighbors to the library and hope we get to meet them in person soon.

  1. I recently put up a little free library …. I was able to buy a refurbished metal box that I think was a newspaper dispenser from years ago . .. it is huge & has 2 large shelves & is weather tight….. I have dedicated to kids because of all the kids doing virtual school & the snowy NJ winter…….. I tried to fill it with books for different age groups & now am adding puzzles, games, activities, coloring books with crayons…… it has gotten a little bit of traffic. I live on the same street as the local high school & grammar school…. I got the idea from your blog, so thank you….

  2. In Peachtree City , Georgia there are golf cart paths connecting all the housing areas and commercial areas. People have installed many free libraries there and it always made me happy to see a child getting or returning books. I love to see children read.
