From My Study Window

by Jon Katz

My workday begins and ends with an Amish horse and wagon trotting by the window. These visits have taken on significance in my life, I see them as omens and charms.

My writing alarm clocks.

When the first carriage comes by in the morning, I see it as the beginning of my workday and I start writing. When the last cart goes by in the late afternoon, I stop writing and spend an hour meditating and listening to music.

I take at least one photo every day.

For me, the Amish represents kindness and simplicity. What a great way to mark the beginning and end of the workday.
