Zinnia Breaks New Ground: The Virtual Therapy Dog Comes To Bishop Maginn High School

by Jon Katz

Zinnia and I do not let mere pandemics stop us.

When I was barred from the Mansion, we just let Zinnia into the front door and she did the rest by herself: rushing from room to room to offer greetings and comfort.

Today, when we were finally admitted to Bishop Magin  High School, we found the school half empty – half of the student body was still at home studying on their laptops with Sue Silverstein and the other teachers.

Sue asked Zinnia to lie down and pointed her laptop camera at her. We know that some of the kids who helped me train her were watching Google classroom and listening to Sue.

Zinnia heard all of the kids – most of the junior class – shout our her name and locked onto the faces she was seeing on the screen. She was into it, she gave everybody a lift.

I can’t swear to it, but I believe Zinnia might be the first therapy dog in the history of the United States to do her therapy virtually.

Hey, whatever works. We will return next week. And we are pretty much unstoppable.

Sue says the kids loved it.
