Flo In Prayer. Do Cats Pray?

by Jon Katz

“Woman and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.” – Robert A. Heinlein.

The longer I live with cats, the more spiritual I believe they are.

Owners of dogs will have noticed, wrote the late Christopher Hitchens, “that if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.”

There is wisdom in that. Flo is the first cat I have gotten close to, the first carries this heavy spiritual mantra. Do cats pray? I think Flo is often praying. When I looked out the window, it seemed to me that she was lost in prayer.

  1. Hey Jon! I’m a dog person for sure with 4. But I have many cat friends and I “check in on” their cats when they go out of town. I believe you’re right. Cats are very independent and praying would be a wonderful thing to do to pass their time. Works for me! xoxo
