Walking Again, A Year Of Rebirth And Renewal

by Jon Katz

Today, I got Zinnia into the car and headed to the hill we used to walk up every day before my foot got cut. That was six or seven months ago. The walk was a  beautiful one, the day is gorgeous and I went sailing up the hill as comfortably and confidently as I can ever remember.

I had no shortness of breath, no angina, no stopping to breathe or rest. Zinnia is a pleasure to walk with, she is off-leash the whole time and stays within 10 or 15 feet of me. If she gets too far ahead or behind, I just stop, and she turns and comes to me. No verbal commands, no treats, just human and dog, completely in sync with one another.

I feel this was really a year of rebirth and renewal for me, and it isn’t over.  I am healthy and strong.

Walking is one of the things I love. I also love putting up With Lists for the Mansion and Bishop Maginn High School and seeing them sell out one item after another in hours. That happened this week.

What good people there are out there, and how wonderful it is to be alive at this time. My heart is strong, my foot is healed, my legs are moving me along. A blessed walk for sure.

It was a beautiful walk, a special walk, it might have been the best one yet.
