See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil. The Co-Conspirators Plot To Get A Treat

by Jon Katz

My dogs, like my donkeys, know how to work me. I am a sucker for LuLu, but I am more rigid on the dogs, although not exactly challenging.

After breakfast, I wash the dishes, and when I come out of the kitchen, the three desperados are lined up in a row waiting for me innocently, being quiet and polite in the belief that I will weaken and get them a treat.

I resist three out of five times – too many treats are not good for dogs, and I am firm on that subject. But today, I caved. I loved the way they lined up, looking so pure and sweet. They got a treat.

It’s like they agreed to be sweet and polite to melt my heart. They are good at this.

  1. I love the pic of the 3 co-conspirators. But I can’t imagine having 3 indoor dogs. You must be awash in dog fur.
Our Collie is basically an outdoor dog as she will not walk on shiny floors and only venues where there are rugs. One of those quirky things she must have picked up as a shelter dog. Basically being a free range dog she has the run of our property. She never strays but does spend cold winter nights in our house and we deal with her fur. I can’t imagine dealing with 3 furry beasts.
PS She does have a outdoor dog house and a bed in our garage, so don’t think she’s left totally to the element the rest of the year.

    1. We live on a 17-acre farm with woods, pastures, sheep and donkeys, which you would know if you had ever read the blog..these dogs are outside almost all of their lives…they come in to be warm, eat and hang out with us. I’m sorry you can’t imagine it, it’s not really very unusual, it is quite easy, healthy and much fun. Our farmhouse is quite clean and there is very little dog hair. You sound like you live on another planet.

      1. Jon…
Never had dogs or cats until my wife talked me into it. Never been without one since.

Current pet Hazy is the sheddingest dog we’ve ever had. But when we adopted her, we signed up for the whole package.

Being an Australian Cattle Dog mix, she is double-coated and sheds seasonally. When we are shopping, people look at us and remark, “Oh, you have a dog.” Our auto mechanic looks at our car’s interior and says the same. Hazy is generous with her calling cards, but I brush her daily, which provides a degree of control.

We have an indoor-outdoor arrangement. Besides evening neighborhood walks that she enjoys, Hazy has “backyard free range.” Our house has a decent-sized backyard enclosed by a block wall. Whenever Hazy wants the yard, she walks to the door, and is excused for as long as she chooses. But our ground is gravel instead of sod, and not pleasant for walking, especially during summer.

    2. When my now husband and I began to envision life together, he told me that my toy poodle could stay inside, but my standard poodle and border collie would have to stay outside. My response, “Then we won’t get married and I’ll continue living single with my dogs indoors!” Needless to say, he advocates making them a part of our lives. We do vacuum and dust almost every day and this after fostering rescue border collies for more than 20 years. We have also a couple of little interlopers, a Boston terrier and, currently, a Pekingese whose shedding rivals our bcs! Wouldn’t change a thing, even when the Peke drags the fallen oak leaves trailing off of his tail feathers from the yard! Along with plenty of outdoor time and exercise, they thrive on being our companions, indoors or out.

  2. Bud was not there… his eyes were closed so he was hiding.. haha…
Happy Holidays, to you and Maria and these beautiful dogs!!

  3. Dog fur? At one point in our lives we had 2 Norwegian Elkhounds and a rescue Afghan hound. All 3 shredded seasonally. We would put out the combings for birds and they went wild with joy, picking up great mouthfuls of fur to line their nests. We could see the mocking bird nest and Cardinal nest in Low shrubs which they used every year. You have never seen such cosy-looking nests!
All my dogs have always been indoors.
My husband, unmarried before, had grown up without pets, except for a cage bird. I have always thought he was very brave to marry me. 45 years ago he joined a house with 2 young children, I old English mastiff 1 Staffordshie terrier and 3 cats and 2 budgerigars.,
I am happy to say that my daughter and her family now have 2 dogs, 1 cat and 4 parrots. 2 of the parrots are rescue-birds as their vet knows exactly who will take them! My son went into the navy– so no pets.
