Portrait: Maria’s Thousand Faces: Watching Nature

by Jon Katz

Every evening, before going to sleep, Maria sits in front of the fish tank. She sees things I don’t see. She knows when every fish came and what they are like, and who is gone. She loves the snails especially and never tires of watching them and sketching them. One day, they will show up in a quilt or hanging piece.

Maria is profoundly attached to nature, she reminds of the writer John McPhee, she never tires of nature and no living thing is too small or insignificant for her to watch and see. This is one of her thousand faces.
