Epiphany At Sunrise

by Jon Katz

Maria had this old artist’s model of the human form and it somehow appeared amidst the clutter of 9ur dining room table, the world capital of clutter. I love this statue, it is striking in several different ways and it was made to be captured by the Leica as the sun rose over the farmhouse and into the dining room window.

I never really paid much attention to the model until I saw the sunrise touch him in the morning. An epiphany is a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new and very clear way. What I saw was that an artist’s educational tool was a work or art in its own right, the model reaches up to the sky every day, I imagined he moves positions all throughout the day but in the morning reaches for the sky.

Epiphany gave me a moment of understanding.  Art does that, even art created to make art.

I named this model Epiphany, although it seems to transcend gender. When the sun struck it this morning, I was having breakfast, the Leica nearby. It somehow seemed holy to me. It was an epiphany, thus the name.
