Bud At Peace

by Jon Katz

It turns out that Zinnia’s bed was a gift for all three dogs. They just keep taking turns using it. I love to see Bud at peace like this, he suffers in the cold a great deal and I can only imagine how he suffered when he was left out in a pen in Southern Arkansas with no roof for two years. He seems so grateful for a warm spot by the woodstove with a soft cushy bed to sleep on when the other dogs are outside or on the road.

These frigid days are rough on Boston Terriers, Bud rushes outside to do his business and then rushes back to the door to come in. But they’ve also been warm and cozy.

We never leave him out for very long and there is a dry doghouse for him if he needs it for a few minutes. And he has his choice of two wood stoves to life in front of, he seems to like to lie on the tiles in front of the living room stove.

Images like this of Bud do warm my heart, it feels good to give warmth and food and shelter to a living thing that has been deprived of all of them.

  1. Jon, I read this quote by Elliott Erwitt and thought of you. “Photography is the art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” This is what makes your photos so stunning and relatable. You see Maria, the animals, and the land through a lens of love. Thank you for posting your photos. Chuck
