Napping With Bud. Affection Trumps Abuse

by Jon Katz

I took a nap this afternoon, the gym wore me out. When I woke up, there was a dog in my lap on the blanket covering me and I had a hand on his soft and fuzzy head.

Maria took this lovely photo of the resourceful Bud, who knows how to find a warm spot on a cold winter day.

Given what he went through, his warmth and affection are something of a miracle. But he is, after all, the Little King, and the entire farmhouse is at his service.

But has every right in the world to be suspicious and wary of people. He is always up for a warm lap or head scratch, a big heart trumps a small one.

  1. Jon…
Bud is a favorite. In one of your past videos, Bud spontaneously ran out of sight, into the pasture until you called him back. It reminded me of the Boston Terrier from a Zyrtec commercial, Baxter, who ran off while his owner was sneezing.

Dogs don’t seem to hold a grudge. They do have “memory”, but eventually can become trusting. Hazy, our Cattle Dog Mix, came to us from an abusive situation. When I arrived home that first day, she sat under our kitchen table guarding her new territory with an unmistakable growl.

Many years later, we have grown to become companions. But memory can limit trust. If I reach too quickly to pat her head, she still flinches.

  2. What a sweet picture of Bud, but Bud never takes a bad one. I am glad Maria took this and you shared it with us Jon.

  3. A picture of total peace and tranquility. Bud really knows how to live the good life, which he absolutely deserves after his difficult past.

  4. Aweeeee, so sweet. My sable Sheltie Amos sleeps on the bed and keeps the boogey man away every night as well as patrols the driveway (visible from his vantage point), and keeps my feet warm. Dogs are the bestest companions.
