Photo Journal: My Life. April 7, 2022 Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall

by Jon Katz

This is my second photo journal day, a new way to organize some of the photos I’m taking, what they mean to me, and show the progress I am making (and the struggles) openly.

It’s also a window into my life, which is what the blog is really about.

The first photo is, ironically, not mine but Maria’s. Her selfie campaign with the animals is what the doctor ordered these days, and I couldn’t resist putting it up. She and the White Hen, the old one, share a moment.

My humble big sky is just getting more significant and more emotional. This one was taken on the edge of town, above a vast cornfield. I took a deep breath when I saw it.

This photo of the proud Liam touched me, our lamb, humbled by his shearing, lying on his back helpless.

I couldn’t get over the feeling he was asking me for help.

The succulent and air plants have been bringing life to our windowsills and our farm all winter.

Soon, some color and light will survive, and many of these plants will spend the summer outside. They will return in the fall.

If there is any ghost on the farm, I’d say it was in this mirror hanging on the barn wall. Every time I come into the barn, I see a different image there, and since the barn sliding door is usually closed when I come in, I can’t account for it. But I can keep photographing it.

Thanks for reading my Photo Journal. I love doing it. I don’t think the weather will permit me to do it every day, but I will do it as often as is possible.

It tells its own story.

  1. Beautiful photos Jon.
I especially like the beautiful big sky which looks very much like the sky in the English countryside, as if you could just reach up and pluck the clouds right out of the heavens. In no way does Montana have the exclusive on this! 🙂 Ditto in southwest Virginia at 2,000 feet elevation where I lived for 10 years…the sky was just bathed in clouds, millions of stars at night which was a sight to behold! Breathtaking, and the fireflies (or lightning bugs) joined us to put on their show!
And then there is Maria with the cheeky chicken! Adorable! (˘-▽-˘)

  2. Your barn makes me want to do an archeological dig in it. Who knows the stories hidden there? How can you resist them?

  3. I looked at the photo of Maria with the chicken and couldn’t help notice a cloud just to the right of the chicken’s eye that looked (to me) like an angel. Perhaps I’ve just been looking up at the sky too much–seeing chickens, sheep, fish, etc. on my walks. Trying to capture them in a photo isn’t so simple!

I love the contrast of the chicken’s red features with the blue/green that surrounds her.
