For a long time, Minnie and Flo had little to do with one another, that changed when they began spending the deep winters in the basement. Barn cats are rarely social, but these two take care of each other.

Barn Cats In The Morning Chill

My barn cats were quite social. They shared a communal nest in the hay with all 3 litters of kittens in it. The mother cats took turn nursing and caring for those kittens. I doubt neither the adults nor the kittens knew whose was whose.
Perhaps they were unusual?
