Daphne

by Jon Katz

I rarely hear from my sister, and when I do, it is often about dogs. She sent me this photo of Daphne this morning, she is a Pyrenees/Anatolian mix, a livestock guard dog who doesn’t like to guard livestock, like Fate.

She does love to guard my sister June. That’s quite a face.

  1. Look at that intent gaze. We lost a Great Pyrenees/Golden retriever mix last year, a wonderful rescue dog that played wonderfully with my daughter’s new puppy. He was solid white with one golden ear. They’re special, indeed.

  2. I don’t find it remotely coincidental that both you/Maria, and your sister, have each been graced with a dog from breeds to which humans assigned a specific task, but who have each decided that their mission in life is different than their *breeding*. For the humans who decided to make changes to their life /career path, it seems they have found soulmates in canines whose natures were to do the same. Blessed are those (no matter the species) who find in themselves the freedom to follow their bliss. They in turn bless those around them. For which I, for one, am grateful.
