Saturday, November 19, 2022: A Peaceful Week Begins

by Jon Katz

Today marks the kickoff of what Maria and I are calling “Peaceful Week,” a week for living quietly, peacefully, and lovingly.

We are slowing it down daily until Wednesday and Thursday, which will be devoted to gratitude and thanks for our life.

I won’t stop taking pictures because that doesn’t work for me.

Maria will be in her studio every day, but Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll stop and give our heads and creative spirits a short rest.

We have much to give thanks for, and that doesn’t include shopping for bargains online.

We are alone together on Thanksgiving, no families.

Monday, I’ll go to my favorite fish market store in Saratoga Springs and buy lobster tails, fish cakes, and frozen Alasan Snow Crab legs. This will be our Thanksgiving dinner.

We’re not planning to go anywhere (I have my Ukelele lesson on Tuesday, so I’ll make it for that.) I will also try returning to the gym three times a week.

Otherwise, here are the key ingredients to “Peaceful Week:”

Solitude for at least two hours a day.

Meditation for one hour a day.

Reading for two or three hours a day.

Blogging once a day (Perhaps twice, including photographs).

Talking, walking. Every day.

Doing good (small acts of kindness) every day.

Tuesday, Medication Class at the Mansion.

Thursday, Maria and I will visit the Mansion with the residents who have no families to go to.

Bishop Gibbons will be closed for much of this week; we’ll visit them next week.

We’re both looking forward to this week. I hope your week is peaceful too.

More later.

  1. Will you have the Wednesday morning Zoom group? I apologize for missing this past week – wasn’t feeling very well and went back to bed after letting the dogs out that morning. I love your idea of a week of peace. ❤️

  2. We have 15 coming for Thanksgiving dinner, so I won’t be able to join you in that. I’ll think of you while I am making 5 pies, preparing a 19 lb. Turkey, peeling potatoes, etc, etc!

  3. We cooked a 13 pound fresh turkey from a farm just down the road last Sunday. I have so many packaged leftovers in the freezer, that I’m set for a couple of weeks. Our Thanksgiving will be just the two of us, too, as family doesn’t work for us anymore. We do have an invite to friends, again this year, so we’ll see how that goes. It’s nice to be able to make our own decisions. I wish you and Maria a happy and peaceful day!
