Butts In The Sun. Donkeys Know How To Stay Warm

by Jon Katz

One of the many things I’ve loved seeing with my animals is how they position themselves in sunlight when it gets cold. It was cold today, and I watched the donkeys become their solar panels, turning to keep the sun directly on them.

They know how to do it, and the sheep do as well. It stayed in the 30s for most of the day. We are beginning to feel the edges of winter. About two months later than usual.

The big thing with animals like these is ensuring they can get out of the wind and rain. Our Pole Barn does a beautiful job; it is always dry there. And the fact it is three-sized keeps the wind from blasting across them.

  1. We also have a 3 sided shelter for our 2 donkeys and they line themselves in the same way to the sun. They know how to maximize their comfort.
