The Amazing Story Of Casper, The Pyrenees Who Killed Eight Coyotes And Saved His Sheep. It Nearly Cost Him His Life

by Jon Katz

The story of Caspar, the 21-month-old Georgia Pyrenees, who fought off a pack of eleven coyotes closing in on the sheep he was protecting and killing eight in a fierce and bloody struggle, is one of the best dog tales I remember reading.

It is all true. Caspar barely survived the struggle, but he is alive and well, still nursing some horrific injuries. A local animal shelter raised $15,000 to pay the vet bills it cost to save him.

You can read the details of this remarkable dog story from the Washington Post here.

Pyrenees guard dogs rarely have to fight; their size and the noise they make usually scare predators away. This pack of coyotes didn’t run, they were coming after the small herd Caspar and some other Pyrenees were protecting.

While the other dogs herded the sheep into a corner and stood between them and the sheep, Caspar jumped a four-foot fence and went after the pack by himself.

Eight of the coyotes were dead when it was over, and the rest ran off. Caspar was grievously injured and near death.
