The Bishop Gibbons Art And Sculpture Class Turns To Gingerbread Madness

by Jon Katz

Sue Silverstein, the Art Teacher at Bishop Gibbons High School, found some very inexpensive Gingerbread Kits and turned them over to her very eager Art Program Sculpture Class students.

Many of them are going home for Christmas. Sue said some are edible and are already eaten (they can be hard and dry). She made them promise that she could take photos of them first.

Sue is a genius at creating creative ideas for her students; she understands the importance of creative learning. She gives students more choices than ever before and draws them willingly into the world of creativity.

She also teaches Community Service, the art of doing good.

Last week, her students made scores of stuffed and toy animals for children in shelters and special programs.

She is putting all of the used and discarded jewelry, metal objects, stuffing, and fabric to great use, and thanks again.

If anyone has more of those things to send, the address is Sue Silverstein, Bishop Gibbons High School, 2600 Albany Street, Schenectady, N.Y., 12304. Thanks, and a significant holiday to you, good people.

Thanks to you, Sue’s students are having a blast and a memorable holiday and learning experience.

Maria and I are going to Bishop Gibbons on Thursday; I hope to write about the efforts of English Department Head Tricia White to re-vitalize the school library and re-ignite book reading to young kids who have grown up in the age of social media.

I also want to check out the new and remarkable things Sue’s students are making. Maria is eager to teach sewing and art and to help maintain the sewing machines in the art program.

Zinnia’s coming too.

  1. You don’t eat gingerbread kits; they are not edible. Therefore, I’d be very surprised if your report that many of them have already been eaten is actually true.

    1. I’m delighted to be the one who surprises and educates you, Christopher; I just talked with Sue and read your message and asked if the gingerbread houses she is making with her students are edible.
She said, “yes, they ate them and enjoyed them…” Sue does not lie, and she knows her Gingerbread. I’m afraid you don’t know what you are talking about.

I bought some edible Gingerbread kits last year(some say “edible quite clearly on the packaging) for the Mansion residents in assisted care, and we ate them together. Those tasted good, but some can be hard and dry. Get offline and over to Walmart; always good to do some homework before you proclaim what is true and hit the send button.

  2. I received the most wonderful note from Sue the other day, in response to a box of metal things and jewelry I’d send a week or so ago. I see now why you’re so hooked on her!

    1. Thanks for sending metal things, Dot. D sue is one of the best human beings I’ve ever met, there are not enough good words in the world to describe her…j
