The Midnight Sketcher

by Jon Katz

I went out of my study last night and found Maria sitting in the dark sketching. She said the lights cast a shadow on the sketch; Maria is always an artist, day and night, 24/7 so I’m used to finding her in various unexpected places sketching at all hours of the day or night. She carries her sketch pad around with her, and she takes it in the car when we go out.

If I go into a store and she waits, she’ll usually sketch until I get back. I love her sketches, they are beautiful, like so many of the things she creates.

Here’s the sketch. It was of the scene in front of where she was sitting

  1. Love the “guiding star” between dual pathways of color, one mostly white and the other a Crayola-box explosion, providing backdrop to the silhouetted artist. Fantastic!
