From Plastic To Wood And Window Sash. Good Riddance. It’s In The Capable Hands Of Melon

by Jon Katz

I made two promises to myself this Spring. The First would be to find a way to get rid of that ugly plastic window on the side of the Pole Barn. Our young Amish friend Mehlon is working on it.

I don’t recall how it happened, but I dislike it whenever I see it.  We have a very old house and barn, and a big plastic window doesn’t work here.

My other project, launched tomorrow, will be to clean the beautiful headless statue that lives in our backyard and is turning entirely black.

I can’t do the woodwork to insert wood where the plastic was and insert a beautiful old farm window up top and in the middle. it will look so much better. I’ve been doing my homework; I have the stone wash, the rags, soap, and water I need.

(Gone already)

Maria has a lot of plans for improving the farm this summer, but she wasn’t crazy about this one. So we hired Mehlon to come and do the carpentry. It was above us.

While we were in Saratoga, he removed the plastic and put up the first wooden boards.  The old window frame goes up in the middle. I suspect he will come and finish this work tomorrow or Monday.

Mehlon is a good worker, fast and careful. The Amish do good work at low prices. It will be good to have a horse in the backyard again. And I will dance for joy when that hole has been filled with old-fashioned barn wood. We’ll paint it red to match the rest of the barn.

Maria kept an old window on the barn for just this possibility, and then she surprised me once again by going to the hardware store and getting some glazing. She replaced the broken glass and applied the glazing.  This going to happen.
