96 Degrees. In The Heat Of The Barn

by Jon Katz

Donkeys handle extremes of weather better than sheep in general. Both are mountain and desert animals, but the sheep have trouble with their heavy wool coats when the temperature goes over 90, as it did today and does much more often these days.

The donkeys will sit out in the sun for a while, even when it gets hot. The sheep never do. After a while, the donkeys come inside to stand quietly with the sheep in the shade.

The donkeys and the sheep are a family, the donkeys protect them and watch over them, and the sheep run to the donkeys when they see anything that frightens or disturbs them.

I visited the donkeys this afternoon, brought them some carrots, and stood quietly with them while I heard them crunch.

I can’t stay out in this heat for too long, but I can stand forever in the Pole Barn.

  1. Over a 100 degrees, in my area south of Tampa, with high humidity. Hottest days I have ever lived in.
