Flower Check: The Battle Of The Japanese Beetles. Baby Rose Is Winning. She’s Not A Baby Anymore

by Jon Katz

Baby Rose (not a baby anymore) is winning her battle against the Japanese Beetles who have been eating my roses. I put out two beetle traps that were full in just a few hours, and I’ve been Spraying the garden with Safer’s Insect-Killing Soap.

Most of the beetles are gone.

The damage afflicting many of my other flowers is the rain – every day in huge amounts, mainly in the afternoon and early evening. Many of the flowers, battered for days and drawing in too much water, are dying. Hopefully, it will stabilize this coming week.

I lost a begonia plant yesterday.

The Lisianthus black pearl is taking a beating. It’s still alive but mashed up.

I can see some damage on almost all of the flowers.

I’m off to the Mansion for Meditation Class.

  1. I wish that I could find Lisianthus plants in my area of New England. I guess I’ll have to find some seeds online to plant next year.
We’re getting battered by the same rain and thunderstorms that you are. Today we had 2 huge cells move through that just dumped rain. Two years ago we had a bad drought, while you had rain.
I love your flower photos 😊.
