Sue Silverstein’s Bishop Gibbons Art Program Wish List: Coming Up In Two Weeks

by Jon Katz

In about two weeks, we will post a Sue Silverstein Amazon Bishop Gibbons Art Program Wish List for the art supplies necessary to turn your generous personal donations into art.

Sue is a wizard as well as a saint. Whatever we send her – she never asks for money, just used or discarded items  – is turned into art. She even turns wood planks into art, from pillows to dresses to outstanding photography and painting.

Her art program is a dazzling success. I hope you’ve seen some of the art she and her students have made here. She’s planning for another great year. I’m planning to support her.

Sue has made it clear to me – and I completely agree with her – that she doesn’t want people to spend their money on the materials used for her art.

She needs some help getting the materials to make the art – printing ink, glue, nails, screws, illustration boards, paints, and brushes.

Bishop Gibbons will be shut down for the next few weeks, so packages might not be delivered. We’re waiting until August 15th for the Wish List.

If you have any discarded materials, they can be sent to Bishop Gibbons High School, c/o Sue Silverstein, 2600 Albany Street, Schenectady, N.Y., 12304. They should be sent after August 15th; thanks.

People from all over the country have sent discarded items – metal, clothes, jewelry, wood, among other things – to the school, and she turns them all into art projects that the students love.

Sue’s students are not on Tik-Tok all day; they are in her buzzing magical artistic rooms in art factors and places of personal expression. She doesn’t need to ask them to put their cell phones away.

She is inspiring all kinds of artists.

The support she needs is for the basic art supplies necessary to make art out of the things we are sending her. It’s a rare day that a FedEx or UPS doesn’t pull up with discarded items – old toys, pins – for her students.

We need to help her get things that make them art.

Her idea of asking for discarded items is genius, especially given the financial pressure so many people are under. It also connects people with the school and the refugee children personally and meaningfully.

Supporting the refugee children is a holy mission to me, a way of doing good that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. Stay tuned. This is a Wish List that keeps on giving.

Support for these children has never been more urgent or essential. I thank you again for your help and support. The Army Of Good is good.
