Photo Journal, Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Images Of Bedlam Farm In The Morning Mist. Maria Unlocks The Soul In A Sketch

by Jon Katz

The morning mist becomes more beautiful as Autumn arrives and the atmosphere changes. There is still color in the gardens and garden beds, and the morning light is a photographer’s dream. These images reflect the beauty and the change; Mother Nature always manages to create beauty, from the summer flowers to the winter pasture.

Maria and I spent a lot of time talking and sitting together in the living room and outside. Mostly, I listen as she processes her Mother’s death yesterday. Tomorrow, we are lighting a bonfire in her honor; she didn’t feel up to it today.

Maria is very anxious to go to her belly dancing class tonight; she says she wants to dance in the company of her friends. That is a very beautiful thing to her. Dancing means so much to her. Her relationship with her mother was complex. Today, she posted a sketch on her blog called “Unlocked.”

I had two vaccines yesterday, one for the flu and the other for Covid-19. I believe these vaccines have saved my life more than once. 76-year-old diabetics with heart disease are very much at risk. Vaccines are known to help people like me. I have no reservations about taking them, just gratitude.

The geography of the farm always seems to be changing. I rarely noticed St. Joseph until recently, and now I speak to him almost daily. I don’t really pray, I’m not a believer, but I am an admirer.

St. Joseph caught the first light today.

He is known for many things; he is the patron saint of fathers, both families and virgins, workers, especially carpenters, expecting mothers and unborn children. He is also the patron saint of attorneys, barristers, emigrants, travelers, and house hunters, among many others.

That’s a lot of weight to carry around; he’s a busy saint, perhaps helping in the Hollywood and automaker strikes.

He’s going to be busy in the coming years; I wish him well.  It’s time for the 90 percent to get some of their money back from the one percent who have been taking it all. The CEO of GM made $29 million dollars last year. Go, St. Joseph. Go, autoworkers.  Go writers and actors and Amazon and Starbucks employees.

In 2020. Amazon’s CEO was paid over $200 million.

I might count on St. Joseph as the grandson of immigrants. Otherwise, he is just a welcome guest with a rich history on the farm; we chat every now and then.

My bronze raven stood out hauntingly in the mist.

The apple tree is shedding its leaves; they are eerily beautiful to me. Trees and flowers live and die in style.

One of  my favorites in the mist is to grab a camera – the Leica today – and rush outside to see the animals grazing as the sun rises. And yes, I had no clothes on; there was no time. The mist only lasts as long as it takes the sun to pop up. If I stop to get dressed, it’s too late. Getting dizzy as I walked too soon was a challenge. Vertigo struck after my vaccines.

The hydrangeas and the Dahlia’s help to frame the sun rising in the mist.

Maria and Zinnia walking together is a sweet way to start the day. Fate was close behind.

  1. I am in the hospital after a bad fall and dislocating hip. Going home today! I have so enjoyed reading your blog abt healing. Can’t wait to get home to my dog and garden and bird feeder. The only thing your beautiful photos lack are the wonderful outdoor smells, the breezes, flowers, animals etc. Thank you!
