Return To The Mansion

by Jon Katz

I’m returning to the Mansion this morning for the first time since my brain drama nearly a month ago.

This marks the beginning of my return to normal, which I still need to do slowly and carefully. But I’m feeling stronger and more focused each day; I’m not forgetting words or getting dizzy as often. I’m sleeping better and walking more confidently. The doctors said healing would take about a month, possibly longer, and they are right on the timing.

My own sense is that I have about a week to go before I’m 100 percent; all things considered, I am lucky. The injury could have been so much worse.

I’ll do an abbreviated meditation class with Zinnia and look forward to our meditation together. I think they will need it, and I will also. I’m told they miss the course, and I miss them. I should mention again that the Mansion has been purchased by a Wall Street fund that specializes in taking over Medicaid facilities for the elderly and converting them into different kinds of facilities that earn more money.

I don’t know if that is the plan for the Mansion or not, but I am concerned about it. I don’t want to jump to conclusions. I’ll know more in the coming weeks. I’ve been working with the Mansion for some time now; I feel very close to many of the residents. We’ll see.
