Parable. The Cat And The Car. How Does He Know Where I Am Going To Go?

by Jon Katz

My new companion cat is more intelligent than I thought, and I already thought he was plenty smart. I’m learning more daily about how Zip thinks and behaves, which is impressive and surprising.

When I come outside in the morning, Zip usually sits in front of the barn looking out over the farm (he went far out exploring in the marsh today). If I stand still, he will stand still.

If I move toward the car, he stays put and watches. If I move toward the barn or the gardens, he disappears and then pops up right next to my feet, always surprising me. I never see him coming or see his route.

Sometimes, when I get into he car, Zip is underneath, and he vanishes when I turn the ignition. Somehow, he knows when I am heading to the car and when I am not. If I am not running to the car, I have a friend with me for five or ten minutes. Then he disappears again and goes off on some hunt. I hardly ever know where he is going or see him get there.

He is interested in me, but far from obsessed. He gets some attention and then goes off on his own.

How does he know I am heading to the car? How does he know when I am not? I have no idea.

My new friend is a complex mechanism. I suspect he is already smarter than me.

  1. Hi Mr. Katz,
I love your blog. It brightens my day. I still have your books and reread them.
Would you remind me of the type, mg, everything about the edibles you take for pain and sleep. I’m 71 abd want to try something else instead of ambien.
I hope I’m able to upload pictures of my two dogs for you to see.
    Thank you,

    1. Kay thanks for writing I’m not at ease recommending cannabis to other people. I’d suggest talking with your doctor and good luck jon

    2. Kay, check out one of your local dispensaries. A good bud tender will be a big help. I find that something with CBD and CDN is helpful for pain and sleep. You can also take plain CBN for sleep. You might find these “stand alone” products at the dispensary without the THC.

  2. I had a cat who never took a walk with me. He just happened to be there at three or four places along my way, in the same places every time I took a walk, but purely by coincidence. I mean, seriously. They have more important things to do than take walks with us.
