Trees In The Pasture, Comparing The Leica With the iPhone 15 Pro Max

by Jon Katz

Lots of people ask me if I think the Leica SLR and the iPhone 15 Pro Max are different from one another. The answer is complex. Sometimes, they are, and sometimes not. I feel the Leica is more prosperous and more profound than the iPhone – Leica Class is the best –  but not always.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has an excellent camera- the best I’ve ever seen on a non-full-frame camera. If you love photography, I’d snap it up. You won’t regret it.

The Iphone Pro Max camera, with its 47 pixels,  is a significant lead ahead of the other iPhones and models. Today, I went out to take a photo of my favorite tree in my favorite pasture; I take this photo in winter storms all the time.

See if you can tell the difference between the two camera shots. I give the correct answer below at the end:

Figure One is above.

The first two photos, the feature photo and the first one above were taken with my Leika SLR. The last photo, the one directly above, was taken with my Iphone 15 Pro Max. The Leica glass is unparalleled in my experience; it always seems a little softer and more prosperous. But the difference here is surprisingly small. The camera in the Iphone 15 Pro Max is outstanding; this build micro-camera would cost $5,000 or $6,000 online or in a camera store.

I am fortunate to have two such versatile and powerful cameras as these two offer. I do 50-50 with the two cameras, one then the other.

  1. In one way it reminds me of Kodachrome vs Ektachrome 400 – having favored vivid I like the iPhone version- with the caveat that AI seems to render the sheep too white and the sky too blue- with that said a full frame camera with minimal processing still seems to offer the most consistent and pleasant visual image.

  2. Why are these taken from different angles and not even near the same time?? What kind of comparison is this? Also, a softer photo is something you do in post production or live filters, not something you want full time. SMH

    1. Marc, do me a favor pleaase, and get lost. Your message is both rude and obnoxious. Start your own blog and do your own comparisons, thanks.

  3. Does it seem that the iPhone photo has a bloom around the tree top? The sky around it seems lighter in color than the rest of the blue sky. Almost like there is an aura around the tree.

This is not good and may be a result of bad HDR processing lighting up the tree vs the bright sky?

  4. Very clearly, the bottom one is an iPhone. Just look at the dynamic range in the shadows in the grass next to the tree not to mention the halo around the tree in the sky from poor quality HDR built into the phone.

  5. Based on the clouds and shadows the pix were not taken at the same time. Could have been a better comparison if taken nearly together.

    1. Jom, the comparison was exactly as I wanted it, and it did what I wanted it to..of course the photos were taken at different times, I’m not a photo store or art teacher at college. The difference between the cameras was quite clear for me and the people who are interested. I do it from time to time, and will do it in any way that is comfortable and convenient for me. If you don’t like it, feel free to do your own comparisons and post them on your own blog.

      1. If you don’t like it, feel free to remove your blog off the website if you’re unable to take criticism from other people. It’s meaningless.

        1. What an interesting post Jhen, here’s an idea for you. Why don’t you remove yourself from my blog and I’ll write what I feel like writing, a novel idea. They call it democracy. Is someone forcing you to read what I write?

This is just a shill attempt to help Apple justify the high price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. There are way too many flaws with this current phone like the fact that it can be bent and cracked, which is quite odd for a premium phone. See JerryRigEverything on YouTube. This is alarming.

    1. It is outstanding, but sometimes awkward to get set..the iphones now have scores, even hundreds of seperate functions..the phone can be confusing, but it is does take beautiful photos. I’m glad I have the Leica, a full frame camera to balance it.
