Farm Journal In The Dark: Color And Light, Dusk At The End Of Daylight Savings Time. Zip Returns, Hay Goes Out, Hens Come Back. It’s Dusk A Lot Earlier

by Jon Katz

It’s pitch black now, thanks to Daylight Savings ending. Our schedules shift around. I’m keeping my promise for color and light; there are two flowers here today, mixed with the feeling of dusk at the farm, a peaceful time. I’m signing off to have the hour I most want, in this case, to read a new mystery by Ann Cleaves. I miss the color and the light; I’m working hard to counter that.

I’ve discovered two new possibilities for mysteries from BritBox, the Bletchley Circle sounds especially interesting to me,  four British female code-breakers from England’s famous Blatchley decoding center in World War II, use their skills to help the police solve murders and River, featuring John Rivers a brilliant politic officer whose genius and struggle is the fragility of his mind. This one sounds cerebral, if it matters. He has a pathology so extreme it can get him free and a mind that could cure him of his gift.

I’ll check them out over the last two nights. We tried Pribus, yuk. Dark, bloody, and creepy. Good night, see you in the morning after my weekly Zoom reading with blog readers and now, friends.

Feeding time is earlier now that it’s darker earlier. The animals are now eager for hay, they aren’t getting much joy from the withering grass.

I’m coming to see this corner of the yard as a kind of beautiful weather vane.  All the weather signals what is coming from the hills.

The color red is known to lift the human spirit.
