Lies. I’m Going To The Movies This Afternoon. There Will Be New Lies Waiting When I Get Home

by Jon Katz

I’m asking my new muses, who I think are devils in disguise, to grow the noses of anyone in public life who lies. This should spark an avalanche of tissues, masks, and lotions.

First, they told us this killing of people in boats was about fentanyl, the poisonous drug that is killing so many Americans.

Then we were promised it was not about regime change, only about fighting for Democracy.

Then we were told we couldn’t be shown videos of the fishermen (according to their wives) who were slaughtered as they clung to their boat to survive. Murder is a military secret. No sweat.

Then, we discovered that Mexico is the country sending fentanyl over the border, not Venezuela.

Nobody cared.

Then we were told that our country would be taking charge of Venezuela

Then we were told Delcy Redriquez, known for stabilizing Venezuela, would take over (it seems she is willing to work with us, we are told today). Yes, she supported murder and the destruction of the freedom of the bad guy. No problem. She is good at business, especially oil.

All of these things were told to members of Congress as well as to us. Nothing new.

Yesterday, we were told the non-war war in Venezuela was not above any of the things above. It was about what was evident from the beginning: oil, so our Billionnaire friends in government can get even richer while the rest of us get even poorer.

The alleged media takes lies in stride now; they barely mention them, and in two or three days, they are forgotten, even though people have been jailed for less. Most people don’t even notice. The Congressmen go on and on, and soon they’ll justify just about anything.

No problem, say our elected representatives. It seems right to them.

Part of the genius of our president is that, although he lies constantly, he has learned to admit it, so there is no controversy about it. I noticed that the Jeffrey Epstein crisis was shoved aside for videos of bombs exploding and those wondrous helicopters sailing over the moon and Generals beaming over their new weapons (soon to be sold to warmakers all over the world).

You may remember the Jeffrey Epstein scandal; the victims are still waiting for the truth promised to them again and again. They may have to wait forever. You may remember the Kennedy Center mess. It’s not nearly as interesting as flashing bombs in the night. Forget about it.

At its best, truth is a multiple-choice question in the new America. I would say it’s taking or leaving truth, but the truth is, it’s just about gone.

Our media has given up on us; that’s Corporate Morality. Money first. Our people are dizzy from the lies. Cash is much more important than truth. One party is just as corrupt as the other.

It doesn’t matter. Our military is strong; they are getting great new stuff to fight with.

No Americans were killed, just 40 or 50 Venezuelans, some private citizens. It doesn’t seem to matter (we have already forgotten the roughly 100 alleged drug runners gunned down in the ocean. They don’t matter anymore either. Their families are shocked, outraged, and mourning.

You won’t see that on the new news.

The new job of journalists is to bow and scrape to the King. Truth is not on the agenda.

We are becoming a country of lies and liars.

I am weary of lies from people who take oaths to tell the truth. I am a believer in truth.

People who lie and lie don’t know their history. They face a truth themselves, they don’t know it yet. If you lie and lie, then one day, when you need to be believed, no one will believe you.

It’s a tragedy that so many people mistrust their government. It is not a surprise.

That is beginning to happen in the United States of America, where truth was treasured once. Sooner or later, a Messiah will appear and punish the liars and chase them away.

I can’t handle any more lies this weekend.

After I do some work with pictures and the Cambridge Food Pantry, Maria and I are going to see a movie, Marty Supreme, starring Timothee Chalamet.

Nobody can lie to me in a theater. They’ll be new lies by then, but I won’t be able to hear them inside the theater.

  1. One party is not just as bad as the other. I know if Kamala were president we would not be in Venezuela. Trump is paying off the oil companies. And diverting from the Epstein mess. Not all media is bowing to Trump. Many good and honest journalists out there. There is plenty of opposition, but when one party has all three branches of government, it’s almost impossible to get any traction. I remember the Bernie or bust crowd in 2016 saying the two parties were the same and sitting out the election. That got us Trump. Let’s support and acknowledge the opposition. Things are terrible right now, but there are still good people who want to do the right thing. This is the worst US government I’ve ever seen.

    1. The people made their choice, I believe the Democrats have to figure out why that happened rather than simply whine about it. I have no idea what kind of President Kamala Harris might have been, and we’ll never know. I don’t get the point out of lamenting it. She lost, fair and square.

      1. Not lamenting, just pointing out that there are differences in the two parties. The Republicans are mostly in lockstep….hard to say what power the Democrats have. They simply do not have the votes to affect change. Maybe, I hope, in 2026.

  2. I heard an interesting take today about the “oil interest” behind this invasion of Venezuela.
We produce more oil than any other country in the world. We don’t “need” the oil. Venezuela has the greatest known and untapped reserves even exceeding Saudi Arabia or Canada. This gives the US a strategic position in bargaining with China and Russia, both of whom rely heavily on Venezuelan oil, if the Vice President of Venezuela agrees to help. The oil is difficult to extract since they do not have the technology to do it. We do. They can dramatically improve the Venezuelan economy and living standards of their people. We could also make$$$ helping the Venezuelans extract and process their heavy crude with our technology.
Of course this all depends on the politicians in both the US and Venezuela making wise choices. We know how that can go sideways, especially with “the orange thing” ( aka TOT ) making decisions that defy everyone’s reality but his.
Hopefully there is a positive way to have this event work out.
