Poem: If I Had Wings

by Jon Katz
If I Had Wings
If I Had Wings

If I had wings,

and I was brave,

I’d fly on the highway,

to the one I love.

If I had wings,

And I was strong,

I’d stand by her side,

where I belong.

The woman I love

is strong and proud.

If I had wings,

I’d sweep her away,

and into the clouds.

If I had wings,

and I was fast,

I’d ride on the wind,

till the sun had passed.

When I have wings,

I’ll head for the sky,

you can look up,

and say goodbye.

Cambridge Food Co-Op. Buy Local. Main Street.

by Jon Katz
Food Co-Op
Food Co-Op

My town has an opera house and arts center, art galleries, a hip cafe, a country diner with lot of big sandwiches, a great independent bookstore and a food co-op. The co-op is where Maria and I do most of our shopping, it has an organic, hippie-ish feel to it that might in other circumstances make me nervous, the people in the co-op are very real, down to earth, lots of fun. It is a gift to buy local, eat good and healthy food, support the sense of community that is so powerful in my town. The co-op is another in my series of Main Street photos.

Three-Legged Queen Yawning

Three-Legged Queen Yawning
Three-Legged Queen Yawning

Cats seem to know to make themselves comfortable, when Minnie isn’t commandeering Frieda’s bed, she likes to hold court and stretch her three legs out on the sofa. Maria is not, shall we say, a hard case when it comes to Minnie, the two have bonded in their healing work. Minnie doesn’t seem to miss the barn at night, but is less and less eager to come inside sometimes.  I suspect Minnie will be the one who decides.

Coyotes In The Field: Vigiliance

by Jon Katz
Coyotes In The Field
Coyotes In The Field

Donkeys are guard animals, that’s why I got them in the first place, to protect the sheep. When we went out to do the barn chores this morning, all three were deployed like Secret Service Agents around the  sheep staring out into the field near Lulu’s Crossing, we saw a coyote sliding through the marsh near the woods behind the pasture.

Red, of course, paid no mind to this distraction, he kept focused on business, watching the sheep, where were circling nervously behind us. There is no need to worry about coyotes when you have donkeys, if anything comes near the sheep they stop being gentle and curious, they lower their heads and charge, biting, stomping and kicking. I loved the vigilance expressed in this scene, donkeys and dogs.
