The Sunday Meditation. Light within. 4/10/11

Sunday Meditation. The first

I’ve been pursuing a spiritual life for as long as I can remember. Perhaps because I am getting older, I am getting closer. Perhaps being opened up in unexpected ways is also a factor. I have written about Thomas Merton, Joseph Campbell, Hannah Arendt, and the usual suspects – Aquinas, St. Augustine. Lately, a rabbi has led me into writings from the Kabbala, the mystical and ancient part of Judaism. Powerful stuff. It has really entered my head and my heart.

I have written often on the blog about the search for a spiritual life, and its many ups and downs. I waited for revelation and blinding light, and sudden faith. I’m still waiting. Small steps, small miracles, day by day, bit by bit.

The work is hard, the rewards great. Fear is an impediment to a spiritual life and as my fear recedes, my spiritual life grows. I have wonderful teachers and I listen to them.

I understand now that this search never ends, one just keeps at it and looks for moments of genuine understanding, insight, compassion and revelation. As my spiritual life has opened up, so has my creative and personal life. They are, I think one. I am coming to see my God as the light and spirit in all of us, in everything. As in God is one. Spiritual writing is not my primary focus, but I think it might be useful to share some of my meditations, as I have shared other parts of my life. I will use text, still photography and video, as I have been doing, to share what I am seeing, thinking and feeling. I’ll shoot for Sundays, which seems a fitting today. Today I used my Ipad and my video camera, and I am still learning about videos. I am getting a little more comfortable speaking to the back of a video camera. So here is the first Sunday Meditation, shot on the farm with the help of dogs, barn cats donkeys and this beautiful place.

I’ve learned it’s good to share.

Although I have been loathe to admit, animals and ancient writers have been my primary partners on this path, at least until Maria showed up.
