After The Storm. A Clearing

by Jon Katz
After the storm

After the storm, we got up early, we drove to Fuller Street Beach in Edgartown, and got there just as the sky began to clear. A wild and wet night, shrieking winds and driving rain. Five to 8 inches of snow on the farm. How lucky I am to be stranded her, in such a beautiful place,  with good friends, with my love, with my camera. A message telling me to slow down, take a breath, look out at the beauty and light around me. Got there just as the scallop fishermen arrived. Beauty, beauty, beauty.

Northeaster. Three. Love and Life

by Jon Katz
Northeaster. Three

I have always loved storms. Storm Center takes the mystery out of them, and also turns them into something frightening. Heavy snow predicted for the farm and the area, but you can’t do better than have Jessica and Chris Barrett watching the farm. He plows us out in the winter and she brought us Simon. The farm is in good hands, and another day here will force some rest, which is needed, and some time for reading, which is wanted.

And how wonderful to share this, as always, with Maria, my love and my life. Watching her tear through Thrift Shops in search of tomorrow’s quilts and pills is very heartwarming and uplifting. She goes into a fever, grabbing stuff, sorting it through it, rejecting some. Birth of art, I think, birth of an artist. How lucky am I. The wind is howling now and sheets of rain driving against the windows. I have met a new dog, Baxley, serving as my writing dog.

Northeaster. Ferries Stopping. Going Nowhere.

by Jon Katz
Northeaster

A big Northeaster has hit the Northeast, and brought wild winds and heavy rain to Martha’s Vineyard – snow expected on the farm tonight. We aren’t going anywhere, as the ferry is unlikely to be running tomorrow, when we planned to leave. So I booked ferry reservations for Monday and will head home then. We are lucky, staying at the home of a good friend, Jan Pogue. Tomorrow we’ll ride around and  take photos. Maria scored at some thrift shops. We had great clam chowder for lunch. Stopped and got a bunch of books to read – I’m working on Steve Jobs  (I’ll write about it later) a new biography on John Brown and his raid on Harper’s Ferry and a novel about a family dealing with Hurricane Katrina. Good stuff for a Northeaster.
