Dog Power

Somebody posted a message suggesting the sheep love being herded by Red and Fate. I don’t think so. I wouldn’t project anything onto the process, the sheep and the dogs are not friends, even if they are supposed to respect one another. Nobody likes being pushed around by a pack of dogs.

The relationship is very civilized, but this photo captures something of the dynamic. Red, a sweet and mild creature outside of the pasture, is Jekyll & Hyde, he takes no prisoners and brooks no disobedience inside of it. When he hoists himself up and glowers at the sheep, they freeze and do precisely what they are told.

Fate does not yet have that gravitas or authority, but she does use her athleticism to corral the sheep, keep them together, and begin to challenge them when they stray. Here, Red holds the sheep where they are, Fate is squaring off with Lucy, who is rushing out to chase her a way. It doesn’t work, and Lucy has nowhere to go.

I wouldn’t say she loves it though.
