Portrait, Wonder Woman (Macro Lens)

by Jon Katz

A Kickstart-funded company called Moment has introduced inexpensive, innovative small lenses to expand the significant photographic abilities of the newer Iphones. The lenses – a macro, wide angle, and fisheye, among others – range in price from the high 60’s to the high 90’s.

Last week I bought a macro lens which attaches to a special case that goes on my Iphone X.

Maria has a fish-eye, and it has already taken some great photos. We both use the wide-angle attachment from time to time, it is great for landscape photography. Last week, there was a sale on the macro lens, and I bought one.

This is a significant step. Normally, my Canon lenses cost more than $2,000. To get a special high quality lens for less than $100 is quite amazing.

This photo of our small plastic Wonder Woman (it sits above the kitchen sink) was taken with the new, quite small macro lens which attaches easily to the Iphone camera.

The lens was about a half-inch from Wonder Woman’s head. The quality of the photo is remarkable.

Smartphones are transforming photography. I am still addicted to my big fat Canon, it does things no smartphone on the market now can do. I don’t know about 10 years from now.

In any case, I’ll be experimenting with the macro lens over the weekend, you are invited to come along and take a look.
