The Spiritual Life Of Donkeys

by Jon Katz

Donkeys are by far the most spiritual life of all of the animals I live with, they know how to contemplate, meditate and accept the world. Traditionally, donkeys have been overworked, pushed hard by callous and greedy humans.

They are onto us, they have learned to balk when too much is asked of them. We don’t ask much of our donkeys. They keep predators away from the sheep, the coyotes don’t want to mess with them.

They love to sit with us, commune with us, softly plead for a cookie now and them. They are peaceful animals, they will often just stare at me without expression I would love to know what they are thinking.

It’s probably the donkey equivalent of “does he have a carrot? Why is standing around looking at us.?” But of course, I can’t really know.

Lulu and Fanny are always together, they are great observers of people and of life on the farm.
