Over Thinking Thinking (And Off To Albany)

by Jon Katz

This morning, a special note in my inbox, a $100 check for Bishop Maginn High School and a note from Marti and Chuck in Virgina.

The card was addressed to me and Maria, but I think it was meant for me:

“You matter. You are kind. You are special. You Over Think. (it would be easier for you if you didn’t.) Love to you both, Marti and Chuck.”

A lovely message, and I thought about it. Marti and Chuck are right of course, I do Over Think. But I also get paid to think and think for a living.

Honestly, I don’t know where “normal” thinking ends and “overthinking” begins. It’s probably not a good idea to think about that too much!

Maria says overthinking is what I do, “if you didn’t think about stuff you wouldn’t have anything to write about, you wouldn’t be who you are.  You wouldn’t write so often. You can get obsessive, but in general, no, I don’t think you overthink.  I think you are just very thoughtful.”

I liked the message, and I liked the good feeling behind it. I’m laughing to myself because I don’t want to overthink the message about thinking.

I’m coming into a phase where I like who I am, and accept who I am. Easier is not appealing to me, I’m shooting for better. Everything I’ve done in my life that is good was hard.

Your message was loving and thoughtful to me, Marti and Chuck, and thanks for the contribution. It gives me something to think about :).

Your check has already bought some blankets for the refugee kids (more on the Wish List later.) and I ‘m heading there to deliver them and teach my Writing Workshop.
