Start The Week Like Dogs

by Jon Katz

I have learned to try to start the day like my dogs do: with focus, intensity, hope, and some joy. They love to get up in the morning, they love to wait by the door to go outside, once outside, they joyously set out to sniff barn, chase one another and run in widening circles.

Humans start the day differently. They grumble about getting up, take hours to prepare for the day get, showered, tend to their toilet, fed and dressed (and check their messages).

Every day is full of hope with dogs – exploring, smelling, eating, running. Their excitement is infectious, there is no grumbling, moaning, staying late in bed.

When the dogs sit at the front door, they radiate joy and expectation. I’m not proud, I want to be like them every morning. I’m working on it.

  1. Speaking of dogs, do you plan to see the movie, The Call of the Wild? I’m not sure how I feel about computer generated dogs. I’d rather see real ones on screen. If you decide to go … a review please? Thanks. Love the photo. You can clearly see the anticipation in their eyes.

  2. I was just thinking this same thing. I am starting to get up at 5 am to embrace the day instead of staying in bed trying to push the day away. Loving my new job probably has something to do with it. My hope is when things are not going as well to still meet the day with joy like the dogs do so well.
