Skirting Wool With Dogs

by Jon Katz

Maria and the dogs joined in to do one of our treasured rituals – the skirting of the wool.

Sunday we take the newly cleaned wool up to the Vermont Knitting Mill where Maria will figure out her colors. Bud and Zinnia and Fate hung out peaceably with her.

This is one of Maria’s favorite things (mine too). It reminds us why we are here and continues our relationship with sheep even after Red is gone.

The wool is pretty clean this year. We’re also going to stop and visit Liz, our shearer on her farm in central Vermont. She has become a friend we are lucky to know her.

  1. Do you sell the wool to the public? I am a long-time knitter and it would please me no end to be able to buy some yarn from your and Maria’s sheep. I prefer a sweater lot, which is about 1200 yards. If the answer is “yes” please let me know how I can go about ordering and paying. Thanks so much!
